Daddy’s Homecoming

Daddy worked for the Seaboard Airline Railroad for my growing up years. He wore a business suit with a white monogramed handkerchief in the breast pocket and a tie and a Fedora hat to work every day. He never left the house without his hat. He was an accountant and an auditor and traveled some in his position with the Railroad. I liked visiting his work because while we still lived in Portsmouth Virginia his office was the same building as the Train terminal. So we would see the trains and talk with the Conductors and Engineers . When we were transferred to Richmond Virginia we would visit his office and stop at the Shoney's restaurant. There was always a good reason to visit Dad's office.

In those days most lobby's had machine's that sold candy and toys. Daddy always had change in his pockets. So, every night on his way out of the building he would stop by the machine's and pick up some toys, never candy. When he arrived home we would run up to him and put our hands in his suit coat pocket and pull out a toy. It was such fun to see what we would get. Daddy never forgot to get the toys and we never forgot to attack him as he came through the door. When he traveled on his various assignments he would bring home a small toy for each day he was gone.

This is one of the good memories I have of my childhood.
